Mudbrick, Waiheki Island

I don’t know why I do this to myself. Researching restaurants is supposed to be an inspirational exercise but it’s just making me feel smaller and smaller…

…smaller than this huge chunk of meat. Nevertheless, isn’t this restaurant pretty?

Life’s a journey, take the scenic route…

Even though New Zealand is beautiful and natural etc etc, it just doesn’t seem like an exciting destination. Maybe that’s what the national ad campaign is trying to counter – go to NZ because you want to be ‘forever young’. But, it implies being a person who doesn’t want to grow up…which, I guess, is not necessarily a bad thing?

Then, there is Tyra Banks’ take on probably half the budget:

But really, it’s about the food. It’s all about the food. Why NZ? 3 reasons:

  1. NZ wine and food is amongst the best in the world (, albeit a biased source).
  2. NZ cuisine is uniquely Pacific Rim
  3. The way NZers eat – as relaxed and as unaffected as possible e.g. summer usually means devouring lamb, cervena (venison), crayfish (lobster), fresh fish and shellfish (and chicken, pork and beef) outdoors in cafes or at barbecues. And the habitual drive down to the Foodtown wine sale to pick up a world-class sauvignon blanc or chardonnay…

Come back tomorrow to check out some ‘fine dining’ Kiwi styles!
